Safety & FAQ

Good questions,
straight answers.

Keeping every trail safe

How are educators vetted?

Every educator submits an application with their background, credentials, and a resume or CV, then completes a background check. Our team reviews each application personally, and only approved educators can list classes.

How do learners report a problem with an educator?

After every session, learners answer three short questions about their educator, including whether the educator acted in a professional and appropriate manner at all times. The answers go only to the Openly Learning team; educators never see them. The Join button for the next session unlocks once the questions are answered. You can also email us any time at learn@openlylearning.live.

What happens if an educator breaks the rules?

We remove educators for any kind of abuse, false credentials, or teaching that goes against our Christian values. When we remove an educator because of an incident, learners in that educator's classes are refunded.

What information do you keep about my child?

Only a first name, grade, and interests, added by you. Children never create their own accounts. Educators see your student's first name only for classes you've booked.

How are payments protected?

Checkout runs on Stripe, a secure payment provider. Openly Learning never sees or stores your card number.

Families & adult learners

How do live classes work?

Classes meet live on Google Meet. After you book, a Join on Google Meet button appears next to the class on your Openly Learning dashboard. Join from any laptop or tablet with an internet connection: at home, on the road, or at the campsite.

Is there a phone app?

Yes. Open app.openlylearning.live on your phone and sign in. On iPhone or iPad, tap the Share button in Safari, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, tap Install when Openly Learning offers it (or choose Install app from Chrome's menu). The Openly Learning icon then opens your classes full-screen, just like any other app.

Who can sign up?

Parents and guardians create a family account and add each student (K–12). Adults 18 and older can sign up to take classes for themselves. Children don't create their own accounts.

How big are classes?

Each educator sets a seat limit for their class, and you'll see how many seats are left before you book.

What time zone are classes in?

Each educator lists their schedule with its time zone, so check the class details before you book, especially if you're traveling.

Where are class handouts and materials?

Educators can share course files like slides, reading, and worksheets. Once you book, they appear under the class on your Openly Learning dashboard, ready to download. Only families who booked the class can see them. Some educators also use Google Classroom for assignments; if they do, an Open Google Classroom button and class code appear with the class.

Do learners earn certificates?

Yes. Every finished session counts toward a certificate in that subject: Foundations at 15 hours, Proficiency at 40, Mastery at 80, and Distinction at 120. A session counts once the learner joins it and answers three quick questions afterward. Each student earns their own, and you can print each certificate or save it as a PDF from your account.

Can I get a transcript for my homeschool records?

Yes. Each student has a transcript in your account listing completed classes, hours, and dates, plus any certificates earned. Print it or save it as a PDF. Each student also has a portfolio (sessions, work turned in, and educator feedback for any dates you choose), and our state-by-state guide shows what your state asks you to keep. Openly Learning isn't an accredited school, so these are records of learning, not school credit.

What are family classes?

Live classes where a parent and kids join the same session and learn side by side. Look for the Family class tag: the price is per family, and one booking covers you and the children you pick. Each child's hours count toward their own certificates and transcript.

Can a co-op or homeschool group register together?

Yes, on classes marked Groups welcome. A group leader signs in, chooses Group registration, types each learner's first name, and pays one group price set by the educator. The group takes the class together in one place, on one screen, with an adult present. Each learner gets their own transcript entry and certificates, kept in the leader's account so they can be printed for each family.

What does "learn it, then go see it" mean?

Some classes are paired with real places, such as national parks, historic sites, or a state's history before a road trip, so learners study a place and then visit it. These classes are coming soon.

Is there a subscription?

No. Creating an account is free, and you pay per class. Book one, or build a whole semester.

Payments & refunds

Who sets the price?

Each educator sets their own price, shown up front on every class. You pay securely when you book.

Can we get a refund?

Class bookings are final, with two exceptions below.

What if an educator cancels or misses a session?

You're refunded for any session the educator cancels or doesn't show up for.

What if an educator is removed?

If we remove an educator because of an incident (for example, any kind of abuse or credentials found to be false), learners in that educator's classes are refunded.

Our faith

Do I have to be a Christian to join?

No. Everyone is welcome to learn with us.

Do educators have to be Christian?

No, but every class must respect our Christian values, and only Christian educators may teach Bible and worldview classes. By teaching on Openly Learning, educators agree that we may remove them if they teach anything that goes against those values.

Are there Bible classes?

Yes. Bible and worldview classes are offered alongside every other subject, taught only by Christian educators.

What is the ministry and discipleship track?

A set of live classes for adults who want to grow as disciples and leaders: Bible study and theology, discipleship and mentoring, church leadership, and practical Christian living. It's coming soon and is taught only by Christian educators.

For educators

Who can teach?

Certified teachers, homeschool parents, subject experts, and college faculty or grad students. Apply with your background, subjects, grade levels, and a resume or CV.

What does it cost to teach?

Listing classes is free. Each educator pays a one-time $35 background check fee when they apply. The background check fee is not refundable.

How do I get paid?

You keep 82% of every booking; Openly Learning keeps 18%. Payments are deposited to your bank through Stripe, and Openly Learning never sees your bank details.

What can I control?

Your price, schedule, number of sessions, class size, and syllabus. You also add your own Google Meet link, course files (up to 10 MB each), and, if you like, your Google Classroom link and class code to each class, and only families who book can see them.

What are passport stamps?

Credentials you earn as you teach: Foundations at 25 hours, Proficiency at 50, Mastery at 100, and Distinction at 250. A session counts toward your hours once a learner who booked it joins, at the session length you set for the class. Your stamps and a printable certificate for each are on your educator page.

Can I be removed?

Yes. We remove educators for any kind of abuse, false credentials, or teaching that goes against our Christian values.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Let your families know as early as you can. Learners are refunded for any session you cancel or miss.
